Paragraph Counter
Count paragraphs and check the structure of your text.
What counts as a paragraph?
This counter defines a paragraph as any block of text separated from the next block by one or more blank lines. A single line of text with no blank lines counts as one paragraph.
Ideal paragraph length
For online content, paragraphs of 2–4 sentences (40–80 words) are most readable. Long paragraphs (8+ sentences) create "walls of text" that deter readers, especially on mobile. Short single-sentence paragraphs can be used for emphasis but lose impact if overused.
Academic and legal writing typically allows longer paragraphs because readers are engaged for extended analytical work. Journalism and online content should target the short end.
Frequently asked questions
A standard 5-paragraph essay has an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Longer academic essays typically have one paragraph per main point or argument, with each paragraph containing a topic sentence, supporting evidence, and analysis.
