What is JSON beautification?
JSON beautification (also called pretty-printing or formatting) takes compressed or inconsistently indented JSON and reformats it with consistent indentation, one key-value pair per line. The result is identical data — just human-readable.
Minified input:
{"user":{"id":1,"name":"Alice","roles":["admin","editor"]},"active":true}
Beautified output (2-space indent):
{
"user": {
"id": 1,
"name": "Alice",
"roles": [
"admin",
"editor"
]
},
"active": true
}
Common use case: API responses are usually minified for performance. When debugging, paste the response here to instantly make it readable — much easier than trying to read {"data":[{"id":1,"n":"x"}]}.
Frequently asked questions
2 spaces is the most common convention and the default in most formatters. 4 spaces is preferred by some style guides. Tab indentation is used in some codebases to allow each developer to set their own visual indent width. All three are valid — consistency within a project matters more than which you choose.
They're the same thing. Beautification, pretty-printing, and formatting all refer to adding consistent indentation and line breaks to make JSON human-readable.
