What JSON minification does
Minification removes all whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines) that aren't inside string values. The result is functionally identical JSON in the smallest possible representation.
Before (83 bytes):
{
"name": "example",
"value": 42,
"active": true
}
After minified (44 bytes):
{"name":"example","value":42,"active":true}
When to minify JSON
- API responses: smaller payloads = faster transfer = lower bandwidth costs
- Config files bundled with apps: reduces package size
- localStorage / sessionStorage: browser storage has size limits
- Database storage: JSON columns in PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.
- Comparing two JSON objects: minify both before diffing
Tip: Minification typically saves 20–40% of file size for typical JSON. Larger savings for heavily indented or verbose JSON. Combine with gzip compression (which HTTP servers apply automatically) for 70–90% total reduction.
Frequently asked questions
No. Whitespace outside string values has no semantic meaning in JSON. Minified and formatted versions of the same data are exactly equivalent — any parser will produce the same result from either.
Yes. Minification only removes whitespace outside of string values. Spaces inside your string values (e.g. "hello world") are preserved exactly.
