Tip Calculator
Calculate the tip amount and total bill for any percentage.
How to calculate a tip
Tip amount = Bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip amount = Bill × (1 + tip% ÷ 100)
Example: $60 bill, 20% tip → Tip = $12. Total = $72.
Standard tip percentages
| Bill | 10% tip | 15% tip | 18% tip | 20% tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $2 | $3 | $3.60 | $4 |
| $40 | $4 | $6 | $7.20 | $8 |
| $60 | $6 | $9 | $10.80 | $12 |
| $80 | $8 | $12 | $14.40 | $16 |
| $100 | $10 | $15 | $18 | $20 |
Quick tip trick: To calculate 20% in your head, find 10% (move the decimal one place left), then double it. 10% of $73 = $7.30, so 20% = $14.60.
Frequently asked questions
In the US, 15–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service. 20% has become the new baseline at many restaurants. In New Zealand and Australia, tipping is not expected but is appreciated for exceptional service — 10% is common when tipping.
There is no firm rule. Most people tip on the pre-tax total; some tip on the full bill including tax. The difference is small — on a $50 pre-tax bill with 10% tax ($55), a 20% tip is $10 pre-tax or $11 post-tax.
