About the 280-character limit
X (formerly Twitter) allows up to 280 characters per tweet. URLs count as 23 characters regardless of their actual length, because X wraps all links through its t.co shortener. Line breaks count as characters.
Tip: If you're near the limit, try replacing words with shorter synonyms. "Approximately" → "About". "Regarding" → "On". Small swaps add up quickly.
What counts as a character on X?
Most letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation count as one character. Emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean count as two, every link counts as 23, and @mentions count character by character. The progress bar above uses this weighting.
Frequently asked questions
On X, all URLs — regardless of actual length — count as 23 characters because X wraps them in its t.co shortener. The progress bar above already counts each link as 23.
Basic emojis (single Unicode code points) count as 2 characters on X. Some complex emojis (like family emojis or flag emojis) can use 4 or more characters. The progress bar above applies this weighting automatically.
X doubled the original 140-character limit in 2017. The 140-character limit was chosen to fit within a standard SMS message (160 chars minus 20 for username). Today the limit is 280 for standard accounts (X Premium subscribers can post longer posts), and characters such as Chinese and Japanese count double.
